Total Finder Update

Total finder has been in it's Alpha stages for some time now.  Although very stable and usable on a day-to-day basis, it did have some issues.  For example, the chrome like tabbed browsing experience was cool, but you could never drag a file onto another tab to initiate a file transfer.  You had to break the tab into another window and do it (rather simply) the old fashion way.  Binary Age recently (perhaps within the hour) updated the app to include a "dual finder" view mode.

Open up two tabs and double click on one of them.  Total finder will stitch them together back-to-back and you can easily transplant files into their respected folders.  The implementation resembles that of Forklift (FTP app) and works seamlessly as well as sexy.  Kudos to everyone at Binary Age for making a stellar product and here's to hoping they will give their Alpha crowd a break on what should be a paid app.

Chrome Humps a Greasemonkey

Greasemonkey has been a favorite Firefox plugin for many power users for years.  It is Firefox's go-to scripting tool with 40,000 user scripts found at Userscript.org and to this day the community holds a serious growth curve.  Sure, Firefox commands 46.4 percent of the overall browser market but, what about the new upstarts like Google Chrome and Safari (not so much a new upstart as a triple breasted hoar of yester-year). You can breath easier tonight because the wait is surely over for all you Chrome and Chromium Mac / Linux users.  Chromium, for those who don't know, is a nightly build that gets an update every night...duh, it's in the name, come on (often quite buggy)!

Unlike Firefox, there is no add-on to manage the userscripts.  You simply find the specific script you want, say for instance helvetimail (yes I am a type nerd, no need to poke fun), click install, click accept on the popup at the bottom of Chrome and BOOM, fin.  To remove or modify a script all you need to do is point your browser to chrome://extensions/ and you can see everything that is currently installed.  Why is this important you might ask?  It brings Chrome right inline with Firefox functionality and allows the super speedy Chrome to be a serious contender on the geek desktop.  In addition, if you have yet to give Chrome a whirl, you are definitely missing a bullet train of a browser.  IE lovers need not apply.

Why Bing Belongs on a Blackberry

Today (frankly this week) has been a complete "wash" of tablet and iPhone rumors due to the upcoming Apple announcement on the 27th.  One of the larger rumors being the idea that Bing will weasel itself into the iPhone as mobile Safari's default search engine.  This, as anyone can see from the picture above, has been seen as a negative move and as the night wanes on is seeming more and more true (source: Tech Check).  Here is a (short) list why Bing should remain an app rather than a default on the upcoming iPhone OS.

  1. Bing is all AJAX-ey and slow where Google is simple, sexy and to the point.  Take an iPhone or Android phone and visit www.google.com and www.bing.com and tell me which looks more user friendly?
  2. Bing's search results (web based) are often times very off where Google pops what you need more then 99.1% of the time (disclaimer: this is my experience).
  3. Bing is superior at shopping and image search but when is the last time you did this on your iPhone?
  4. Bing and the way that Ballmer intends you to say it is pure "upspeak."  I don't need Bing thinking everything I say to it is a question.
  5. Bing might have an API but Google is a platform with a robust collection of apps that many people use daily...much like their iPhone.
  6. Rumor has it that Bing will not take a cut from ad clicks which might be true but for how long? Sure Bing isn't seeing a tremendous amount of clicks now but think about every iPod Touch and iPhone?  Ballmer has been known to be a smidgen greedy and underhanded.  Jobs isn't working with Bill these days.
  7. MS has nothing that Apple would want so why create a marriage of convenience now?  Of course, they might have something clever up their sleeve that we have never seen but...really?  Why throw them a bone now?
  8. See that number above? Yeah it reads 190 positive and 1983 negative and it definitely has changed since I took the snapshot.
  9. People will change the search back to Google (hopefully an option) and now Apple isn't making money off clicks (I assume) so why not stay with the platform that is making you "dolla - dolla - bills."
  10. Android is climbing the mobile ladder quickly.  HTC and Motorola have some beautiful handsets in the works.  In addition, the software has seen it's way into the hearts of big time advocates (Leo Laporte, John Gruber, Kevin Rose, Jason Snell, Some guy with a lichen based last name, etc) who are tremendous influencers.  Why make a small blunder that could perhaps cost you a considerable amount of market share?
Yep, a list.  I don't normally pull them because they are SEO link-bait and generally filled with junk; however, I think it was only fitting with this information.  The only unfortunate thing is the rumor mills are still pumping like crazy and we have an entire week before we can turn them off.  Here's to hoping that (with or without Bing) Apple knocks our socks off with their new iPhone OS.  I leave you with Homer Simpson and a smidgen of wisdom.

Boost That "3g" Speed on Your S-hiny Nexus One

It seems like some nice folks over at jk-on the run (I have no idea how to write it out) have figured out a temporary fix for ailing 3g stability on the brand new, Nexus One.  Everyone can walk their way over to the JK article and run through the steps or you can walk through the much easier, numbered steps below.

  1. Head over to "Settings" in the application menu.
  2. Click on "Wireless & networks"
  3. Scroll almost to the bottom of the menu and click on "Mobile Networks"
  4. Your phone should go into a search mode looking for the nearby GSM networks.
  5. When this completes look for the option that reads "Select Automatically" and select it.
  6. Pat your back...and your crotch if you feel so inclined.
That is it!  There have been some mixed reactions for everyone who has gone through the process.  Some people see constant 3g connections, faster 3g upload / download speeds and even more 3g 'bars.'  Looking back through the method it seems that the phone is set to search ONLY for one cellular band which is peculiar.  However please remind yourself, all of these phones are unlocked from the factory, meaning T-Mobile doesn't set specific settings to improve reception.  Good luck and make sure to comment up if this little hack actually works...or doesn't.

How IT is Currently Completely and Hopelessly Wrong

ComputerWorld UK (Bob Lewis) wrote a truly phenomenal post this morning highlighting what is actually wrong in the realm of Information Technology.  Sure a young gun like myself can harp on how badly the IT industry is run...actually so badly when most businesses say it they feel an instant disgusting taste in their mouth but, none of you older peeps care.  The article might be a little long but it is completely worth your 15 minutes and worthwhile for anyone getting into the business or the admin that has been around for eons..  If it moves you, or you have an opinion feel free to start a conversation in the comments.

Your First Nexus Isn't Filled With 3g

Their have been some scathing issues surrounding the release of Google's first flagship phone, the Nexus One.  Granted, and mind your comments I have worked in the IT "help" industry before, most of these connectivity issues are user error and nothing actually wrong with the hardware.  The document above was leaked via Engadget and appears to be a cheat sheet for T-mobile reps when answering questions from nasally Nexus owners.  The best bit seems to be what you can barely see at the end of the image: "Do not schedule a follow up with customers."  Who's head do you think these issues fall on (HTC / Google / T-mobile)?  Since I am such a blind telecom hater, my moolah is on T-mobile.

A Hipster Cyst

The Hipster is perhaps one of the most understood individuals around.  They are often misconstrued as being hobos, lost, from the past, from the future, a loser, social outcast, or perhaps even sasquatch.  I do believe this timeline should help anyone out who feels lost when interacting with their hipster friend, family member or new acquaintance.  Oh, and it's simply too damn good to not share.

Links in Comments Kosher? Nope

Are you one of the few people who actually give back to the blogs you love so much?  Granted you give those people what they need by actually navigating to the page; however, you should always give back in the form of comments.  When you sign up to comment, you get the miraculous ability to embed a url into your username.  Therefore, if the shit that comes out of your mouth and is successfully translated onto the computer makes sense and titillates the other folk, they can click on your name and navigate to the specific URL.  Like most of the internet (yes it is confusing), there is a certain code of ethics underlying this system.

Comment spam tends to be a troublesome 'motha' if you happen to run or administer a Wordpress blog (or any blog really).  This spam, like the stuff that filters into your inbox, is usually full of viagra references and gibberish.  Spam filters are extremely good at sniffing this stuff out and deleting it which is a definite breath of fresh air.  A hidden rule of thumb, that a lot of people witnessed for many years was to withhold links within the body of the comment due to it functioned much like spam.  Now though, oh now, it seems like there are some serious "playas" in the field who think this unwritten rule is useless.  This people is like the principle telling you before you exit out your high school doors on a Friday afternoon..."blow jobs don't count this weekend guys."  Seriously?

Quit putting links in the body of comments.  You get enough props by the URL in your name and that is all you need.  You are participating in someone else's conversation in hopes that they might pat you on the back (without links) at an unspecified time in the future.  Make your comments succinct, intelligent, and humble...period!

Shortcomings

Yes, I know I have been absent, and yes I know that I secretly made some kind of pact with myself at the beginning of this year to blog way more.  Trust me I am on it!  It took a couple of days (10 to be exact) to realize that emailing my posts in every time was not for me.  I am hoping to figure out how to embed pictures into my posterous without sending them as attachments.  I crave 'tech islands,' this is why I love wave and need a place to go when writing a blog post.  Maybe it comes down to me simply hating email, who the fuck knows.  If anyone has any idea how to imbed pictures directly into a posterous post in the website admin side comment up cause it would be amazing.  Thanks!
